Records of Remembrance

The possibility of writing a testimony concerning the life and service of a deceased Friend has been a valued part of our tradition. A testimony should not be a formal obituary or eulogy, but should record in thankfulness the power of divine grace in human life.

QUAKER FAITH & PRACTICE 4.27

Since 2008 Oxford Meeting has been preparing Records of Remembrance for every member and regular attender who has played a part in the Meeting, however modest.

When a Friend’s death is announced our Business Meeting appoints a Friend who has known the deceased to coordinate the record, seeking contributions from anyone who chooses to write something.

Once the record has been read to both Local and Area Meeting, a copy is put in the Meeting’s library, to be stored eventually in the Oxfordshire Records Office. Some Records of Remembrance are also shared with Britain Yearly Meeting.
