Her late husband David was, as his Guardian <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/education\/2017\/aug\/23\/david-gill-obituary\">obituary<\/a> highlighted, &#8216;a poet, teacher and lifelong activist for peace and justice&#8217;. Rene has given permission for us to publish several of his poems. Here are just two from a large and beautiful collection.<\/em><br \/>\n\r\n                            <\/div>\r\n                        <\/div>\n<h2>My Mother and the Chair-O-Plane<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\"><strong>David Gill<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Nine-tenths rational, my mother. She kept her feet on the ground<br \/>\nand trod the worn grass circle of her days<br \/>\nwithout complaint. With her, precision and love<br \/>\nwere one. Like the clothes she spilled from her sewing machine.<br \/>\nShe loved us severally with a warm intelligence.<br \/>\nShe believed in calculating little pleasures.<br \/>\nGive her a map, no matter how threadbare or smudged,<br \/>\nand she would predict from thumbprint contours and symbols<br \/>\nthe happy valleys, the quiet spinneys, and all<br \/>\nthe finest views to drink with thermos tea.<br \/>\nShe was Thomas Cook\u2019s best apprentice at planning visits.<br \/>\nShe revelled in time-tables. She could co-ordinate<br \/>\narrivals and departures in the smallest print.<br \/>\nHer family was her private Welfare State.<br \/>\nWe were her planned economy.<\/p>\n<p>But on Bank Holidays when the fair came round,<br \/>\nshe almost ran, her handbag stuffed with shillings,<br \/>\nto be with the swinging boats and dodg\u2019em cars<br \/>\nand ride the whiff of sausages at dusk.<br \/>\nAnd always we would trail her to the heart<br \/>\nof all the fun and find the chair-o-plane.<br \/>\nAnd there with beating hearts we watched her mount<br \/>\nand hang aloft in chains, intent, remote,<br \/>\nbefore the music reared and round she swept<br \/>\nand passing us, passing us by till we stood like orphans.<br \/>\nAt last the organ died, and she drifted round<br \/>\nto inherit us once again, her smile still warm<br \/>\nfrom a wild and private journey.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1423\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1423\" style=\"width: 474px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/oxfordquaker.com\/newsletter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/Screen-Shot-2021-06-28-at-4.06.38-PM.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-1423\" src=\"https:\/\/oxfordquaker.com\/newsletter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/Screen-Shot-2021-06-28-at-4.06.38-PM-1024x506.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"474\" height=\"234\" srcset=\"https:\/\/oxfordquaker.com\/newsletter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/Screen-Shot-2021-06-28-at-4.06.38-PM-1024x506.png 1024w, https:\/\/oxfordquaker.com\/newsletter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/Screen-Shot-2021-06-28-at-4.06.38-PM-300x148.png 300w, https:\/\/oxfordquaker.com\/newsletter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/Screen-Shot-2021-06-28-at-4.06.38-PM-768x379.png 768w, https:\/\/oxfordquaker.com\/newsletter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/Screen-Shot-2021-06-28-at-4.06.38-PM.png 1187w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 474px) 100vw, 474px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1423\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo by SL Granum<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<hr>\n<h2>The Vanishing Trick<\/h2>\n<p>(<em>Written when the diagnosis of dementia was confirmed.<\/em>)<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\"><strong>David Gill<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Don\u2019t take me for permanent.<br \/>\nDon\u2019t think I\u2019m a monument<br \/>\naccreting grey lichen.<br \/>\nDon\u2019t think I\u2019m a totem<br \/>\nwith creosoted root.<\/p>\n<p>Don\u2019t think I\u2019m a stayer.<br \/>\nI\u2019m more of a Friday afternoon<br \/>\na smile on a moped<br \/>\nat knocking-off time.<br \/>\nI\u2019m the last day of September.<br \/>\nI\u2019m the instinct that ranges<br \/>\nswallows on phone wires.<br \/>\nI\u2019m the mellow sunset<br \/>\nfor every muster,<br \/>\nan evasive mister,<br \/>\nan easy-going fellow<br \/>\nfleeing over stubble fields<br \/>\nin my own evening light<br \/>\nto the western ferries.<\/p>\n<p>When I greet you these days,<br \/>\nmy faithful, my on-going friends,<br \/>\nmy eyes are saying goodbye.<br \/>\nWhen you take me for the man<br \/>\nI was yesterday,<br \/>\nyou\u2019re mistaken.<br \/>\nI\u2019m half that man,<br \/>\nand running out fast.<\/p>\n<p>You\u2019ve little idea<br \/>\nhow much of me\u2019s gone<br \/>\nwith the autumn flights<br \/>\nto other lands.<br \/>\nMy thoughts are already abroad<br \/>\nIn foreign railway compartments:<br \/>\nalready they wear the rags<br \/>\nof foreign words.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m the ring-stain<br \/>\nwhere the glass was,<br \/>\na cat-smile, no more<br \/>\nabove the garden wall,<br \/>\na fading shape in an archway,<br \/>\na raised arm on a distant quayside<\/p>\n<table>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"text-align: left;\" width=\"312\"><a class=\"fasc-button fasc-size-medium fasc-type-glossy fasc-rounded-medium fasc-ico-before dashicons-arrow-left-alt fasc-style-bold\" style=\"background-color: #0315a3;
