Green and glistening
\nsummer leaves
\nreach across the fence
\nof soft light fragrant wood
\nwith holes to peep through
\nand a smell of ancient forests.<\/p>\n

I peep at neighbours I never see
\nfor both are stiff with Englishness,
\nneedy in their high defences,
\nremote and dignified,
\nalone and undiscovered.
\nOnly the leaves reach out,
\nInnocent and pure,
\noblivious to the limits
\nof life controlled by rules,
\nby distances and silence,
\nand fear of being known.<\/p>\n

I peep at neighbours I never see
\nIn an empty silent garden
\nhoping for life there
\nbeyond the high fence
\nwhere distances are kept
\nand rules matter,
\nwhere life is contained in borders
\novergrown with grief.<\/p>\n

I peep at neighbours I never see
\nand an eye meets mine
\ngreen and sparkling
\nin its solitude.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
