Brighid Schroer<\/strong><\/p>\n

A black steel bench with curved and slatted seat,
\nlaser cut and crafted by hand,
\nfaces the war memorial. A design along the back
\ncommemorates \u2014 barbed wire;
\nsilhouettes of soldiers in round helmets
\ntrudging, standing, facing out alert,
\nguns at the ready;
\none turns away, bowed under his bulky pack.
\nTwo spade handles lean as if dug in trench earth.
\nCrosses, low and tall, overlap to form a cage.
\nLacquered poppies gleam beside them, scarlet, startling.<\/p>\n

Under the warm September sun, a low tree throws
\nshadow, embroidered at the edges, over the grass.
\nAcross the road, tall sandstone houses
\nrest in eighteenth-century elegance.
\nNothing in the scene suggests a different England
\nfrom the one they died for.
\nTime folds up, a tattered sheet
\nweighted with loss and change.<\/p>\n
