\"\"<\/a>Look into a new-born baby\u2019s eyes.
\nWhat do you see?<\/p>\n

Augustine knew \u2013 it\u2019s sin.
\nAdam fell, we follow, flesh is weak,
\nmatter inferior, the natural world
\nnot to be trusted but controlled.<\/p>\n

Pelagius disagreed. The Celtic monk
\nwho loved the wilderness of Wales
\ngazed at the new-born and declared
\n\u2018I look into the very face of God.
\nHis spirit is in all that is created
\nfrom tiny insects crawling in the grass
\nto great wild beasts
\nthat roam throughout the forest.
\nGod\u2019s spirit dwells within them.
\nTrees and grass and flowers,
\nGod\u2019s spirit gives them beauty.\u2019<\/p>\n

The argument was fierce in Rome
\nand Palestine. The powerful
\nprevailed, a heretic denounced.
\nMan took dominion over mother nature,
\nfed his people, prospered, grew.
\nThe wild was tamed, subdued, then ravaged.
\nOur earth lies conquered, breathless,
\ncounted out.<\/p>\n

So was Augustine right? Has sin
\ndestroyed the gift of life,
\ninvisible boundaries crashed
\nby needy egos?<\/p>\n

Listen! Watch!
\nThe wild is fighting back.
\nA fierce new energy is being born \u2013
\nfire and flood and hurricane,
\nthe city in the wilderness,
\nthe holiness of trees,
\nthe protest of the birds,
\nFirst Nations first again,
\nour blood in the green earth\u2019s heart<\/p>\n

and now the heretic
\nis prophet.<\/p>\n
