Imagine a shining youth in a painted
\ngarden, awed and kneeling to announce a birth;
\nor sky at night with radiant light instead
\nof dark, and voices singing \u2018peace on earth\u2019;
\nor pale-faced virgins worshipping their lord
\nwith \ufb02utes and trumpets in a heavenly band;
\nor a warrior judge with scales and sword
\nwho separates the virtuous from the damned.<\/p>\n

This one\u2019s not going anywhere, up there,
\n\ufb01xed to the vaulted roof, with six-foot wings,
\none mended, and whose calm medieval stare
\nbeams heaven\u2019s perspective down on earthly things \u2013
\ntranscending time and fortune, yet somehow
\nso present, vital, an eternal now.<\/p>\n
